History and Geography Curriculum Intent
At St-Pius X RC Primary School, we aim to teach our children about the world in which they live and how it has changed over time through our humanities curriculum.
History and Geography lessons focus on acquiring facts and knowledge as well as developing historical and geographical skills. Children are encouraged to see how the events and people of the past have shaped our culture and the world we live in today. A range of places and cultures are studied and children are also encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility for our planet. Concepts of respect and tolerance underpin all the teaching as children develop a sense of their place in the world.
Through the study of humanities, we want children to experience the world beyond their daily lives to imagine experiencing places and events and to see the world through the eyes of a range of people. By looking at events from different perspectives we aim to develop a sense of empathy in our children.
In EYFS, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Understanding the world, is taught through a combination of teacher input and continuous provision opportunities, learning is planned to encourage children to develop their learning independently through exploration and challenge.
In Key stage, 1 & 2 the teaching of History and Geography follows the National Curriculum and is integrated within our topics. Great emphasis is placed upon acquiring historical and geographical knowledge and vocabulary to express ideas and opinions about our world.
