PSHE Curriculum Intent
At St-Pius X RC Primary School we believe PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We aim to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of grow.
Through the Jigsaw programme emotional literacy will be explicitly taught with children discussing their feelings and emotions in a safe supportive environment. A range of teaching strategies such as discussion, debate, games or role-play will be used to create engaging lessons that the children enjoy and are keen to participate in. As part of lessons children will be taught a range of vocabulary to help them appropriately express how they are feeling and be encouraged to use this at all times.
Children will be helped to understand why managing our emotions is important and the role this plays in helping them to be valuable members of society both now and in later life. All emotions will be treated as valid and children helped to understand that all humans experience a range of both positive and negative emotions in their daily life.
The teaching of PHSE goes beyond specific PHSE lessons and is part of all aspects of school life, adults will look for opportunities to help children deal positively with their emotions whenever possible.
Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. In EYFS children will explore the ideas of relationships, feelings and appropriate behaviours, self-confidence and self-awareness, rules and routines, empathy and restorative justice
