INTO UNIVERSITY FOCUS WEEK
21st - 25th january 2019
Year 6 have had an amazing week at our IntoUniversity Focus Week. The now annual event sees students from St Pius X link up with the IntoUniversity Bristol South team up at the Withywood Centre for a fantastic week of activities centred around our topic and also looking at aspirations and what we hope to achieve in the future.
The week started on Monday when we went up to the centre and were split into three teams: Egypt, Tanzania and South Africa, in line with this terms topic. The day was full of Geography activities, researching our countries and finding out facts in order to create travel guides and posters.
Tuesday was based on arts and crafts and we learnt all about African masks. We looked at the occasions on which people would wear them and the symbolism and tradition behind certain colours and patterns being used. We then designed and made our masks which are up on display in school.
On Wednesday we had an amazing trip to Wild Place!
Wild Place is a wildlife conservation park in South Gloucestershire owned and operated by the Bristol Zoological Society. The day really helped bring our topic to life as we took part in two excellent workshops; the first based around Madagascar where we learnt about sustainable forests and the dangers that many species are now facing from issues such as hunting deforestation, and farming. Later on we had a workshop all about okapis, a critically endangered animal native to the Democratic Republic of Congo. As well as this, we got to explore the park to see many African species in the flesh and learn lots of interesting facts about them. We saw giraffes, cheetahs, lemurs and many more.
On Thursday we were back at the Withywood Centre, with the focus now changing to us and our future aspirations. We researched universities and the courses they offer and were also given the chance to work with some current students from the University of Bristol. We then considered what sort of careers we might want when we're older and looked into the courses we would have to take in order to do this. We wrote all of these ambitions out on 'IntoUniversity Leaves' and put them on to our 'Aspiration Tree' which is also displayed in school.
Friday was the main event as we visited Bath University! We were given a tour of the amazing campus by current students and got to ask lots of questions. We then had to do some research and interview students about university life, giving us an even better insight! Following this, we presented the work that we'd done about our African country and finished off with our very own graduation ceremony! It was another amazing week with the IntoUniversity team where we learnt lots and got to experience so many new things!
